How to Make a Copy of a Music CD for a Friend

In order to make a copy of a music CD for a friend, you’ll first need to copy the music from the CD to your computer. This is a rather simple process and can be done in a few minutes using a free built-in audio program such as Windows Media Player (on a PC) or iTunes (on a Macintosh).

  • Windows Media Player
  • ITunes
  • Music CD
  • Blank CD-R

Instructions

  1. Using a PC

      Open Windows Media Player.

      Insert the music CD into your computer that you would like to copy for a friend.

      Click “Rip” and then click “Start Rip.” Windows Media Player will copy the music CD to your Windows Media Player library. Once finished, eject the music CD from your computer.

      Insert a blank CD-R into your CD burner.

      Click “Burn” and then drag the music files that Windows Media Player ripped from your music CD into the “Burn List” that appears in the column on the right side of Windows Media Player. After you have finished adding all of the music files that were copied from your music CD, click “Start Burn.” Doing so will initiate the Windows Media Player burning process.

      Eject the CD when finished.

    Using a Mac

      Open iTunes.

      Insert the music CD into your computer that you would like to copy for a friend.

      Click “Yes” when iTunes asks whether or not you would like to import the CD. ITunes will then copy the music CD to your iTunes library. Once finished, eject the music CD from your computer.

      Insert a blank CD-R into your CD burner.

      Create a new playlist to burn to CD by clicking “File” and selecting “New Playlist.” After doing so, an untitled playlist will appear in the column on the left side of iTunes. Click on this new playlist to rename it. Then click “Music” located under the “Library” section in this column to display your iTunes music library.

      Drag the music files that iTunes ripped from your music CD into the new playlist you created. After you have finished adding all of the music files that were copied from your CD, click on the playlist to highlight it. Then click “Burn Disc” and select “Burn.” Doing so will initiate the iTunes burning process.
