How to Get Protection Off M4P Files

M4P files bought from the iTunes music store are encoded with digital rights management (DRM). While this is designed to prevent unauthorized copying of files, it also stops people who bought the music legally from playing the music on certain portable music devices or on multiple computers. Although DRM cannot be easily "cracked," there is a method you can use to circumvent the copyright protection that will give you DRM-free versions of the M4P songs.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch iTunes. Go to "File" and then "New Playlist."

    • 2

Drag the M4P files into the new playlist.

    • 3

Insert a blank recordable CD in your disc drive.

    • 4

Click on the playlist and then click on the "Burn Disc" button that will appear in the bottom-right corner.

    • 5

Select "Audio CD" next to "Disc Format" and click the "Burn" button. After iTunes burns the files to CD, it will eject the CD.

    • 6

Insert the CD back in the disc drive. iTunes will scan the disc and ask whether you want to import the CD. Click "Yes." The songs will now be burned back into your library without any DRM attached to them.
