How to Recover an Unreadable CD

An unreadable CD can be recovered by polishing away the scratches and cleaning its surface. You can use household products such as rubbing alcohol, furniture polish and toothpaste to polish away scratches from your unreadable CD. Instructions

    • 1

Apply rubbing alcohol to a soft cotton cloth and clean the scratched surface of the CD. Start cleaning at the center of the CD and then move towards the outside edge of the CD. When the disc has dried, test it in a CD player to see if its performance has improved. If there is no improvement, go to step 2.

Apply furniture polish to a soft cotton cloth and polish the scratched surface of the CD. Start polishing at the center of the CD and then move towards the outside edge of the CD. While polishing, the furniture polish should fill in the scratches on the CD. This should allow a CD player to have an easier time reading the CD. When finished polishing the disc, follow the instructions in step 1 to clean the CD and then test it in a CD player to see if its performance has improved. If there is no improvement, go to step 3.

Apply toothpaste (not gel) to a soft cotton cloth and polish the scratched surface of the CD. Start polishing at the center of the CD and then move towards the outside edge of the CD. Give extra attention to the areas of the CD with more scratches. While polishing, the fine grain of the toothpaste should slowly wear away the scratches on the CD surface. Once the scratches are removed, this should allow a CD player to have an easier time reading the CD. When finished polishing the disc, follow the instructions in step 1 to clean the CD and then test it in a CD player to see if its performance has improved. If there is no improvement, you might want to seek the help of a professional CD repair company.
