How to Track Songs out of Logic Pro 8 Into ProTools 7.4

Logic Pro and Pro Tools are two of the most powerful and versatile digital audio programs available for the home computer. Though both programs use a similar multi-tracking layout, each program contains its own unique plug-ins, filters, software instruments and effects. If you have recorded an audio project using Logic Pro 8 and would like to export it to Pro Tools 7.4 (to take advantage of the Pro Tools features), you will need to do a bit of conversion.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your Logic Pro audio project by double-clicking the project file, which should appear in your "Logic" folder (Macintosh HD > Music > Logic).

    • 2

Click the "S" button appearing on your first track on your main project window (known as the "Arrange" window). Your tracks are the horizontal spaces spanning your Logic window, indicated in the left column by names such as "Inst 1" and "Audio 1." The "S" button also appears in the left column and automatically mutes all additional tracks when selected.

    • 3

Click "File" on the menu bar and scroll down to the "Bounce" option at the bottom of the list. Click "Bounce" and enter a name for your file on the pop-up menu. To remain organized, name your file "Track 1," since you are exporting only the first track.

    • 4

Select either "AIFF" or "Wave" on the "File Format" menu, appearing on your "Bounce" window. The AIFF and Wave formats both maintain the full quality of the file and will both export seamlessly to Pro Tools 7. In the "Start" box, make sure the number reads "1 1 1 1" (indicating the very beginning of the song. In the "End" box, click the up arrow until the number stops advancing, indicating that you have reached the end of the song. Click "Bounce" in the lower right corner to export your file.

    • 5

Click the "S" button a second time on your first track to unmute the remaining songs, bringing the entire music mix back into focus.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 2 through 5 for each subsequent track on your project window, leaving you with an exported file for each individual track. Each track contains a different section of the recording, such as a bass line, lead vocals or guitar, and by keeping these sections separated, you can maintain full control over your mix when transferring your song to Pro Tools.

    • 7

Open Pro-Tools 7.4 and create a new music project by clicking "File" on the menu bar and selecting "New."

    • 8

Create a new track in Pro Tools for each exported audio file. For example, if you extracted five audio tracks from Logic, you will need to create five new tracks in Pro Tools. To create a new track in Pro Tools 7.4, click "Track" on the menu bar at the top of your screen and select "New" from the drop-down menu.

    • 9

Drag one exported audio file onto each blank track in Pro Tools, placing every file at the beginning of the time line (on the far left side of the project window, beneath the number 0:00). This will ensure that your tracks remain aligned in perfect synchronization.
