How to Get the T-Pain Effect on Music Audition

Digital pitch correction allows you to filter a recorded singing voice to fix any notes sung off key. By applying the maximum amount of this effect, you can achieve a robotic vocal quality, sometimes referred to as the T-Pain effect (after the rapper) and Auto-Tune (a popular audio processor used to generate it). You can use Adobe Audition, an audio recording and editing program, to apply this type of vocal manipulation to your own music, giving your voice the same treatment enjoyed by popular artists like Akon and Cher.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Open Adobe Audition and access your "Waveform View" screen. This allows you to record, edit and view raw audio clips. Click the button in the upper left corner of your screen that looks like a series of wavy green lines.

    • 2

Click the "Record" button along the bottom of your project window (resembling a large red dot) and choose a sample type from the list of options. For a basic recording with a small file size, choose "Mono." For greater detail and increased file size, choose "Stereo" with a resolution of 16-bit or 32-bit. Your sample rate refers to the number of samples per second, a way of monitoring the consistency of your sound. Higher sample rates mean higher overall sound quality, but also require more memory. Click "OK" to begin recording.

Record your vocals. You can use your computer's internal microphone or external microphone, or connect a professional vocal microphone for better quality (for this, you will need an external sound card or an XLR-to-USB adapter cable). Click the square "Stop" button when you finish recording.

    • 4

Click the "Effects" menu at the top of your screen and roll your mouse over the words "Time/Pitch," appearing on the drop-down menu. When the second drop-down menu appears, select "Pitch Correction."

    • 5

Click the "Automatic" tab in the upper left corner of the "Pitch Correction" window. Here, select whether you want to edit your pitch on a major, minor or chromatic scale. For the most accurate pitch enhancement, select major on the "Scale" menu, and select your key. For example, if your vocals correspond to a song played in the key of D, select "D" on the "Key" menu. If you do not know the key of your song, select different keys until your filter sounds correct. If you use the incorrect key, you will know right away, because your vocals will sound melodically chaotic, lacking harmony and consistency.

Click your mouse inside the box labeled "FFT Size" and enter "1024." Your Fast Fourier Transform corresponds to the amount of transformation, and 1024 is the largest number you can apply to the FFT algorithm in Audition, resulting in the Auto-Tune effect. Click "OK."
