How to Use Ivory in Logic Pro

Synthogy's "Ivory" is a digital audio plug-in designed to precisely emulate the sound of a grand piano, set to your desired specifications. You can access the plug-in using many popular digital audio workstations, including Apple's Logic Pro software. By integrating Logic and Ivory, you can add layers of professional piano melody into your digital music projects, using only your MIDI keyboard or computer keyboard to play the notes.

Instructions

    • 1

Install your Ivory software, if you have not done so already, by inserting the Ivory installation disc into your CD-ROM drive, clicking the installer icon on your desktop and following the on-screen prompts to install the plug-ins into the appropriate audio libraries.

Connect a MIDI keyboard. Ivory is a digital plug-in that generates notes based on signals sent from an external device, so if you connect a digital music keyboard to your computer and begin playing, the notes will play in Logic with the sound of a grand piano. Connect a MIDI-to-USB adapter to your computer's USB port, and then connect a MIDI cable to the adapter (through the "MIDI In" jack) and to your music keyboard (through the "MIDI Out" jack). If you do not have a MIDI keyboard, skip to the next step. You can use your computer keyboard as an alternative.

Open Logic Pro. To access your Ivory instrument plug-in, you will first need to access your Logic Mixer, which you can do by clicking "Window" on the menu bar and selecting "Mixer," or by clicking "Command" and "2" simultaneously on your keyboard.

    • 4

Create a new track on your "Arrange" window (the main window that appears when you first open Logic) by clicking the "Track" menu and selecting "New." Select "Software Instrument" on the pop-up menu. A track is a recording layer on which you can create music. For example, you might create one track for your melody, one track for bass and a third for percussion. Your new track will appear at the bottom of your "Arrange" window and on the far right side of your channel strip (on the "Mixer" view).

    • 5

Click your "Mixer" window again and select your track on the far right side of the channel strip. Click any of the empty boxes appearing directly below "Inserts" heading on the track, hover your mouse over "Audio Units" at the bottom of the pop-up list and select "Ivory" from the second pop-up list. The ivory synth will appear on your screen.

    • 6

Adjust the parameters on your Ivory menu by dragging the knobs clockwise or counterclockwise with your mouse. For example, the "Release" determines how long the note lingers after you press it, and the "Gain" allows you to raise or lower the volume. The "Program" menu lets you navigate between different preset sound settings.

Play your grand piano sounds. If you previously connected a MIDI keyboard, just play the keys on the keyboard as you would on a piano. If you do not have a MIDI keyboard, press the "CAPS LOCK" key on your keyboard to access your virtual piano, and use the corresponding keys on your computer keyboard to play the notes. For example, the "A" on your computer keyboard corresponds to "C" on the grand piano, and the "S" key correspsonds with "D."
