How to Use a Keyboard As a MIDI Sonar

A MIDI keyboard is a device that resembles a piano that hooks up to a computer and enables the transmission of MIDI data from the keyboard to the computer. MIDI devices are used to sculpt audio by sending data information containing parameters that will define the sound. Cakewalk's Sonar program allows its users to use their regular computer keyboards for recording and editing MIDI in absence of a regular MIDI keyboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Sonar and choose to create a blank project or load an old project. At the menu on the top of the screen, select "Options."

    • 2

Click the "MIDI Devices" tab under the "Options" box that pops up. Under the "MIDI Inputs" and "MIDI Outputs" headings, check the box labeled "Virtual Keyboard."

    • 3

Click "OK" to apply the changes. Once back in the main project window, create a new track with a virtual instrument. The computer keyboard will now control the input.
