Fruity Loops 7 is a versatile PC audio workstation that functions as a digital recording studio. In addition to recording and mixing in the program, you can use Fruity Loops' built-in MIDI instruments to craft any style of music. In order to control these instruments with ease, you need an external MIDI controller keyboard. Instructions

    • 1

Insert the M-Audio Keystation 49E installation disc into your CD or DVD-ROM drive. This disc contains the software drivers necessary for the Keystation to communicate with your computer using MIDI. Follow the prompts on the installation wizard to install the Keystation software.

Connect your Keystation 49E to your PC using the included USB cable. Insert the square connector into the corresponding USB port on the back of the Keystation, then insert the rectangular connector into any available USB port on your computer. Do not connect the cable to an external USB hub: the Keystation requires a powered USB port.

Open Fruit Loops 7 on your PC and create a new music project by clicking "File," then "New." A multi-track recording window into which you can record audio will open.

Set the M-Audio Keystation 49E as the primary MIDI input. Click the "Options" menu, then select "MIDI Settings." Select "M-Audio Keystation 49e" from the list of "Input" sources and click the "Enable" button.

    • 5

Click the "Channels" menu near the upper-left corner of the screen and select "Add." Select an instrument from the list of available software synthesizers. Fruity Loops 7's virtual sound bank includes electronic instruments, basses, strings, orchestral instruments, pianos and more.

Play the selected instrument using the keys on your M-Audio Keystation 49E. Use the pitch bend wheel to apply a gliding effect to your notes, or use the modulation wheel to add expression. The "Octave" buttons allow you to switch between higher and lower octaves, and the "Advanced Function" button lets you add reverb, chorus and other effects.
