How to Wire Tascam to Cubase

The Tascam company specializes in audio devices used for recordings. This includes four-track and eight-track recorders, audio interfaces (external sound cards for the PC), portable mixing boards, monitor speakers and more. By connecting Tascam devices to Cubase, a digital recording program for Mac and Windows, you can create professional music recordings by integrating hardware and software. To achieve a successful connection between Cubase and your Tascam, though, you will need to perform some quick configurations.

Instructions

Connect your Tascam device to your PC. Some Tascam devices, like the US-122 interface and the Tascam US-428 mixer, contain built-in USB cables that you connect directly to your computer. Other devices, like the Tascam 2488MKII and the Tascam DP-02, will require you to connect using a 1/4-to-1/8-inch cable. Connect the 1/4-inch plug to the "Out" or "Output L" jack on your Tascam device, and connect the 1/8-inch plug to the "Line-In" jack on your computer.

Connect any instrumentation to your Tascam device. If using a mixer or interface, connect your instruments to the corresponding jacks using the necessary TRS cables, XLR cables and other audio cables. If you just want to transmit pre-recorded audio tracks to Cubase from a Tascam multi-track recorder, you can skip this step.

    • 3

Open Cubase and set up your device configuration. Click "Devices" > "Device Setup" on your menu bar and click "VST Audiobay" (or "VST Audiosystem," in some versions of Cubase) in the left column of the pop-up window. From the list of input options, select your device. If you did not connect through USB but used the analog method instead, the device will not show up as an input. If no inputs show up, just use the default ASIO driver.

Create recording tracks in Cubase. Whether you want to record guitars through a Tascam interface, transfer original songs from a multi-track recorder or copy music from a Tascam stereo, you will need to designate tracks for recording. Your tracks will resemble long horizontal bars, spanning across your screen, intended to capture your recordings. In some cases you may need just one track, but sometimes you will need more (for instance, if transferring four layers of music from a four-track recorder). To add a track to your project, click "Project" > "Add Track" > "Audio" on your menu bar.

Select your newly created track by clicking the track title in the left column. Click the "Record" button to begin a recording session, and then transmit audio from your Tascam device to capture the recording. Depending on your external device, you can achieve this in a number of ways. For instance, if using a multi-track recorder, select a pre-recorded song from the main menu and press "Play." If using a mixer or interface, begin playing any connected instrument. For Tascam stereos, just press "Play."

Press "Stop" on your Cubase window to end a recording session. Your "Record" and "Stop" buttons both appear along the top of your project window. "Record" is indicated by a red dot, while "Stop" is indicated by a square.
