Open your beat making software and create a new project.
Set the tempo, which is the pulse or the speed you would clap along with the music. It will be in a box usually marked "tempo" or "BPM" (beats per minute). This can range from 60 BPM for a slow ballad to more than 200 BPM for a fast dance track. The tempo can be changed at any time later.
Choose a time signature, which is the basic grouping of beats in a track. Pop music is usually grouped in four beats, but it can be grouped in two, three or more. This will be in a box marked "Time Signature" and will be written as a fraction, e.g. "4/4" or "3/4." It is the top or left number that tells you the grouping.
Lay down a kick drum with the sequencer. This is a list of instruments with a grid or series of buttons to the right. There will be four groups of four buttons. The first button on each group is the beat. Find an instrument with "kick" in the name. Click on the first button of each group of four. This is a "four to the floor" beat. Press the "Play" button and listen to your beat. Check the box marked "Loop" to keep the beat going.
Add a snare by finding an instrument with "snare" in the title. Click on the first button of group two and of group four. Press "play." Now you have a beat.
Add some rhythm. So far you have only put instruments on the beat. Find an instrument with "shaker" in the title. Click on button one, three and four of each group of four. Press :Play." This is a basic rhythm.
Save your track.
