Gather some songs for your CD. You can purchase digital music online from sites like Amazon, iTunes and Napster. You can also find free (completely legal) digital music at sites like Archive.org, Artist Server and Epitonic. Download songs in MP3 format and save them to your hard drive.
Download a media player for assembling and burning music. Depending on your computer's operating system, you may already have a media player like iTunes or Windows Media Player. If not, you can download these programs for free from their respective websites, in addition to similar programs like Media Monkey and Winamp.
Create a playlist for your CD. Your "playlist" functions as the blueprint for your CD, in which you can arrange the songs that you want on your CD, in the order in which you would like them to appear. Some programs, like iTunes and and Windows Media Player, contain a "Create Playlist" or "New Playlist" button on the main project window, while other programs (like Media Monkey) feature this option on the menu bar.
Add songs to your playlist. Locate your downloaded song files and drag them directly onto your playlist title. Alternately you can select the playlist title with your mouse (to highlight it) and then drag the song files onto the central window space of your digital media player. The song titles will appear in a list, and you can arrange them in any desired order by dragging them up or down.
Insert a blank CD into the CD-ROM drive of your computer. You can use a CD-R for one-time copying, or use a CD-RW if you want the ability to record new material on the same disc at a later time. Some music-only CD players do not support CD-RWs, so check the user manual for your player and use CD-Rs if in doubt.
Highlight your previously assembled playlist and click the "Burn" button on your digital media player window. If you do not see a "Burn" button, look for a large red circle in the lower or upper right corner of your window, or for a button that reads "Copy." If the program prompts you to select a CD type, select "Audio CD."
