Make a short reel. Companies require demo reels to run between 30 to 90 seconds. Do not disqualify yourself by submitting a longer reel. Your objective should be to capture their attention in a compelling way that will leave them eager to see more. If executives like what they see, then they may request a longer reel.
Structure your footage. Present a demo reel that has a coherent point of view. Make an outline of important shots and categorize them, starting with the most captivating shot. Include notes on what each shot needs including fonts, transitions and cuts. The flow of the reel should visually tell a story and properly showcase your work.
Choose music that complements the reel. Music evokes emotion and, when paired with visual scenes, can make or break your reel. This is an important part of the editing process. Tailor your music to each scene, whether it is action, dramatic, sorrowful or comedic.
Customize your demo reel. Clients want to see if your skills and experience can be suitable to fit their business needs. Do not send in amateur work, because first impressions are everything. Be very specific with what is presented and keep your reel appealing to a broad audience.
