How to Tag a Song

Making sense of a music collection is much easier when you use tags. By adding specific tags to your digital music files, you can manage your entire collection fairly simply and efficiently. Tags also save you a lot of time and energy. Tag categories such as year, genre, publisher and even mood allow you to organize songs by the way you listen to them, which makes creating play lists and custom compact discs simply.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the computer folder containing your music library, and find a song that you want to tag. Right-click on the song's file name. A menu of options will appear. Click on "Properties" in the menu. A Properties window will display.

    • 2

Click on the "Details" tab that is near the top left corner of the Properties window. That action will display details about the song file, including some in a column with the heading "Value."

    • 3

Hover the computer cursor over the items, or text fields, in the "Value" column of the Details. Click on any text field to modify its content. Light-colored, descriptive text will appear to the right of your cursor with instructions as to what content is appropriate for that specific field; that text will disappear when you begin typing. The "Comments" and "Mood" fields allow for the most customization and are generally left blank for the user to fill. Songs that have identical tags in the "Artists" and "Album" fields will be grouped together as compilations in programs such as Microsoft Windows Media Player and Apple iTunes. Note that some fields cannot be modified, such as "Length" and "Bit rate," because they are integral parts of the file.

Click on the "Apply" button at the bottom of the window when you finish tagging your song. Then click on the "OK" button to save your changes. Repeat this process for each song you want to tag.
