How to Organize Ableton Session View Clips

The Ableton Live digital audio workstation, DAW, is a powerful tool for creating electronic music. It incorporates two distinct interfaces: Arrangement View and Session View. Arrangement View displays clips on a linear timeline and is used for composing and arranging songs. Session View vertically displays clips in channels or tracks. Session View is non-linear so you can trigger any combination of clips by clicking on them. Use Session View for improvisation and live performance. To make using Ableton Session View as easy as possible, organize its clips for ease of access and visibility.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the "Start" menu button, and type "Live" into the Search box. Click on the Ableton Live icon that appears in the list of programs. Ableton Live opens in Session View by default.

    • 2

Press "Ctrl" and "T" simultaneously to add audio tracks, which are designed to hold audio samples. Add as many audio tracks to Session View as you need.

    • 3

Click the square-shaped "Live Devices" icon in the left-hand column. Click on "Instruments" and drag and drop any built-in instruments you want to use into the Session View Window. Ableton automatically creates a new MIDI track for each instrument.

    • 4

Click on the "Plug-ins" icon, which looks like an electrical plug and is immediately below the Live "Devices" icon. Drag and drop any third-party VST instruments you want to use from the Plug-ins section to the Session View window. Ableton automatically places each VST instrument on its own MIDI track.

    • 5

Click on one of the folder icons in the left-hand Ableton pane. Navigate to the samples you want to use, then drag and drop them into slots on the audio tracks. Place samples of the same kind on the same audio track. For example, you could drop drum loops onto one audio track, vocal samples onto another and synthesizer samples onto a third.

    • 6

Navigate to the MIDI clips you want to use. Drag and drop them onto the MIDI tracks containing the instruments that you want to play the samples.

    • 7

Right-click a clip and select a color from the colored boxes at the bottom of the context menu. Set clips of the same type to the same color: for example, you can set all of the drum clips to red. If you want to distinguish different clips on the same track, set them to different shades of the same color.

    • 8

Rename clips by right-clicking them and selecting "Rename." Give each clip a distinctive, easily-visible name. Click, drag and drop the clips in a track to rearrange their order as desired.
