How to Set Up a Drum Machine in Ableton

A software drum machine allows you to arrange a collection of samples within the machine, then trigger the samples using a MIDI clip or attached MIDI controller. The Ableton Live digital audio workstation includes two built-in drum machines: Impulse and Drum Rack. Use the simpler interface of Impulse to quickly try out drum patterns; if you want to create more complicated drum sets, use Drum Rack, which includes a built-in LFO and mappable Macro knobs.

Instructions

  1. Impulse

    • 1

Launch Ableton. Click the "Live Device Browser" icon. Click the arrow next to "Instruments," then drag and drop the "Impulse" icon from the browser into the mixer window.

    • 2

Click the "File Browser" icon. Navigate to the first drum sample you want to use. Drag and drop the drum sample into the first sample slot in the Impulse window.

    • 3

Adjust the "Start" and "Decay" knobs to change the drum sample's volume dynamics. Increase these settings for a softer drum sound; decrease them for a shorter, punchier sound.

    • 4

Click the "Sat" button to apply distortion to the drum sound. Turn the "Drive" knob to the right to increase the amount of distortion.

    • 5

Click the "Filter" button, then select a filter type from the "Mode" drop-down menu. Adjust the "Freq" knob to change the frequencies that the filter affects. Set the drum sample's level and position in the stereo field using the "Volume" and "Pan" knobs. Repeat the process for the rest of the drum samples you want to use in the Impulse drum machine.

    Drum Rack

    • 6

Launch Ableton. Open the "Live Devices" browser, then drag and drop "Drum Rack" from the "Instruments" section into the mixer window. Drag and drop a drum sample from the "File Browser" window into the "C1" slot on the Drum Rack. Double-click the loaded sample to reveal its controls.

    • 7

Click and drag the "Vel" field to 80 percent. Adjust the drum sample's "Attack," "Decay," "Sustain" and "Release" knobs to alter the sample's volume envelope as desired.

    • 8

Click the "Off" button under "Filter" to toggle it to "On." Select a filter type from the "Type" drop-down menu, then adjust the "Freq" and "Res" knobs to change the filter's parameters.

    • 9

Click the "LFO" button to enable the low frequency oscillator, which automatically adjusts Drum Rack parameters according to a specified frequency. Set the LFO's shape and speed in the "Type" and "Freq" fields, respectively. Click the parameter that you want the LFO to affect, then increase the value of its "LFO" field to determine the degree to which the LFO affects it.

    • 10

Right-click a control in Drum Rack and select "Map to Macro 1" to connect the control to the first Macro knob. Repeat the process for any other parameters that you want to control with the Macro knobs. You can map more than one parameter to the same Macro knob. Set the drum sample's volume and position using the "Volume" and "Pan" knobs. Repeat the process for any other samples you want to add to the Drum Rack.
