Mixtape Ideas

The mixtape has its origin as far back as the 1970s, during the emergence of hip-hop. DJs would tape all the popular music to keep the party going. The process evolved throughout the 1980s and 1990s, when people would use mixtapes as a way of expressing feelings for one another with specially dedicated songs. Even though cassettes may be a thing of the past, the concept holds true for portable CDs and USB memory sticks. With the digital music evolution, it is easier than ever to compile a group of your favorite songs as a personal collection of music for your own use or a thoughtful gift to someone else.
  1. Romantic Gift

    • Whether a wedding or an anniversary, a mixtape with a romantic theme can be designed especially for that special someone. Use songs that remind you of how you met, or the songs that give you hope for your future. You may also use a mixtape to pop the question to your beloved, by allowing your favorite love songs to set the mood. This will give her a gift to cherish that moment in your lives far beyond the moment she says "yes."

    Birthday Gift

    • Celebrate that special day in your life or the life of someone you love with a mixtape that celebrates a birthday. Research all the popular music from your birth year, or use all your favorite songs that remind you of special times in your life to create a soundtrack for your past. Use this as a backdrop to your own party or create a special CD for a friend or loved one.

    Motivational Tapes

    • At the beginning of the year when all your resolutions are still in place, create a mixtape to keep you on track for your goals. Make a high-energy mixtape to accompany your new workout routine, or include motivational songs to keep you on track toward your particular dreams. This is something you can take along in your car, or plug into your computer while you work.

    Driving Tapes

    • If you have a long road trip ahead of you, you will want to create several CDs to help pass the miles away. Make CDs based on specific themes, such as movie songs, driving songs, or popular songs by the decade. A fun game to play while you're driving with family is to make a collection of TV theme songs, which will have the whole family guessing and singing your own inventive trivia game.
