Akihiro Sakakura

Akihiro Sakakura (born 1949) is a Japanese computer scientist who is credited with "inventing the electric dictionary".

While working for Sharp in 1980, he completed a prototype of the world's first electronic dictionary, the Sharp PA-8000, as the leader of a 20-member research team.

He also led a team that created the first practical text entry system for Japanese using a stylus or a finger (predecessor to the technology used by Tablet PC).

He joined Sony in 1989, where he served as Senior General Manager of Open Platform Strategy Office, and worked on projects including developing the ATRON personal digital assistant and establishing the e-book standard.

In 2000, he led Sony's efforts in developing a handheld game platform, which ultimately materialized as the Sony PlayStation Portable.

He left Sony in 2005 and is currently a professor emeritus of the University of Electro-Communications, where he continues his research on next-generation information devices.

In 2012 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 10th Annual International Mobile Gaming Awards for his contributions to electronic dictionaries and portable gaming devices.
