Write the press release on company letterhead. Having company letterhead with a logo at the top will make the press release appear more professional to the reader.
Begin with the words "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE" at the top of the page. This text should be written in all caps. It is standard on nearly all music industry press releases. This tag line provides a sense of urgency to the reader and highlights the time-sensitive nature of the information.
Include contact information. Place your contact information at the top of the music press release to make it easier for media outlets to get in touch with you for more information.
Compose a headline. It should be written in all caps to grab the reader's attention. The headline is the most important part of a press release. If it does not hook the reader immediately, it is unlikely that the rest of the press kit will be read. Write a unique headline that will make the artist stand out from the crowd. Simply saying "new album" or "new tour" will not grab attention, unless the artist is already well-established. Focus on what is special or interesting about this particular album or tour that distinguishes it from the vast number of other music press releases media outlets receive.
Write the body of the music press release, which will expand on the headline. Keep music press releases to only one page if possible. The body should be written in third person, even if you are the artist and are writing your own press release. Provide important details such as the release date of the album, the regions a tour will cover, or the program's itinerary. If possible, use a few quotes from positive reviews that the artist has received. Do not be subjective or use boastful adjectives to describe the artist or event. The press release should be read as actual news. Any praise should be in the form of a "quote" from another trusted media source. Including noteworthy facts, such as mentioning impressive album sales, ticket sales, or other data are effective ways of emphasizing the artist's importance.
Music press releases should end with the symbols "###" to let the reader now for certain that he or she has reached the end of the press release.
Reiterate the contact information. At the bottom of the press release, once again place the contact information. Begin this section with a phrase similar to "For more information, please contact:" Having contact information easily visible is very important. You want to make it as simple as possible for interested parties to contact you regarding the artist.
Staple the press release to the front of the press kit folder. Use a single staple in the top center of the press release.
