How to Cite a Music CD

The purpose of a bibliography is to give readers enough information about a resource to allow them to find it themselves for further study or verification. Though most bibliography guides will give you detailed instruction on how to cite books, newspapers or websites, audio CDs and other formats are often omitted. There is a standard format for "other media" however, in both APA and MLA citation styles.

Instructions

      Cite your audio CD in APA format. The entry will look like this: Performer's name and first initial (year of release). Title of album [Audio CD]. Location recorded: record label. Make sure to underline the album title. For example: Sinatra, F. (1969). My Way [Audio CD]. London: Warner Brothers UK.

      Cite a specific track on the CD in APA format. The only difference is that you will include the title of the song. Only the title of the album is underlined. For example: Sinatra, F. (1969). All My Tomorrows. On My Way [Audio CD]. London: Warner Brothers UK.

      Cite an album in MLA format. The entry will look like this: Performer's full name, last name first. Title of album. Location recorded: record label, year published. Make sure to underline the album title. For example: Sinatra, Frank. My Way. London: Warner Brothers UK, 1969.

      Cite an individual track in MLA format. Again, the only difference will be the inclusion of the track title. The album title must be underlined. For example: Sinatra, Frank. "All My Tomorrows." My Way. London: Warner Brothers UK, 1969.
