How to Make A Great Press Kit for Bands

A "great" press kit is anything that gets the band the job. The job can be a club gig or a recording deal. The press kit has to be something the club manager or an executive can look through quickly and get all the pertinent information he needs about the band.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a cover letter explaining the purpose of the press kit. Write different versions to go to different clients. A cover letter for a club should not have the same wording as a cover letter to a disc jockey.

    • 2

Write a short bio that clearly states the band's name, the group members, the type of music it plays, and a link to any social media site. List some other venues the band has played at, especially if they are large or important venues that could impress the reader. The whole bio should not take more than one page.

    • 3

Include printouts or copies of any positive reviews on separate sheets.

    • 4

Insert a demo CD with no more than four tracks. That's enough for the person to tell if she is interested in hiring the band. The music can also be on a flash drive, and you can always point out that more music is on the social media site.

    • 5

Include a lyrics sheet for the songs if the demo is going to a record company.

    • 6

Include at least one 8-by-10 black and white photo. The venue may use this photo as part of its promotion of the show.

    • 7

Place all of the material in an envelope that will draw attention. A plain envelope is acceptable, but an envelope with impressive art or graphics will stand out from the many other press kits the reader will receive that week.
