How to Build a Band Press Kit

A band's press kit is a critical part of getting the band out of the garage and playing paying gigs. The press kit is what the band manager will use to entice bars and venues to give a new and upcoming band a chance. It is vital to the band's success that their press kit cover key details about them and be as professional as possible. Creating a press kit starts with the band knowing its direction and how it plans to get there.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a cover page for your band. This should include a brief overview of the style of music the band plays and any achievements or press releases regarding their performance. Also, include contact information and a website, if available.

    • 2

Create a page of photos for your band. Preferably, these should come from live performances, but if the band is just starting out, arrange photo sessions in practice that resemble a live gig. Make a montage of engaging photos and try to include crowd shots if possible.

    • 3

Write a biography page for the band. This should be more detailed than the cover page. A good place to start is with how the band was started and what their goals are. Detail each member of the band and explain the band's mission.

    • 4

Include a song list of songs the band can perform. This can help attract a bar owner's eye if the list includes popular cover songs. If the band is all original, describe the songs so that a prospective client knows what they are getting with your band.

    • 5

Have a music CD recorded of your band in action. A professional studio session is preferable, but a great demo can be recorded at a practice session with minimal equipment. Record two or three songs that capture the essence of the band and have the CD labeled with the names of the songs and your contact information.

    • 6

Assemble the parts of the press kit together in a binder of some sort. Make several copies of the press kit so they can be easily distributed to potential clients. Keep the files on a computer so additional copies can be created as needed.

    • 7

Consider creating an online press kit for the band as well. Many correspondences with potential clients may take place over email, instant messaging or cell phone text messaging. Having a press kit that can be easily transmitted over the Internet is another way to maximize your band's visibility. There are many online sites that will help you create a press kit. Use the same materials from your physical press kit to assemble your digital one. Online press kits are also cheaper to produce as images and text can be easily transmitted without the need for printing and mailing.
