How to Make a Movie Press Kit

A movie press kit contains a packet of promotional and publicity materials for a motion picture. They are sometimes referred to as a media kit or an electronic press kit (EPK). This is the first impression that the media, including film buyers, critics and sales agents will have of your movie. The press kit serves as a large "calling card" for your project and can leave a lasting impression if done properly. It is generally the publicist's job on a film to produce the press kit, but anyone can put one together with a little effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a 9" x 12" pocket folder made of heavy fiber paper - one that has a large pocket on each side of the folder. You want the folder to be thick because it is going to hold all the contents of the press kit.

    • 2

Create a one sheet, sometimes called a cover sheet. This is an 8" x 10" sheet that looks like a small version of the movie poster with the title on it. The production company contact information goes on the back, along with cast and crew credits. Quotes of any favorable critical reviews, or lists of awards, can also be listed here.

    • 3

Write a synopsis of the film if one doesn't already exist. This summarizes the story of the movie in a couple of paragraphs. A still photo from the movie can also be copied onto the synopsis.

    • 4

Create biographies of the cast, above-the-line crew and key production personnel. "Above-the-line" includes the producers, director and writer or writers. Key production personnel include the cinematographer, editor, composer and other department heads.

    • 5

Select several of your production photos. Every movie keeps a still photographer around that shoots pictures of the production while it is filming. Select photos from the most exciting or dramatic moments in the movie.

    • 6

Gather copies of critics' reviews if they are available. If the reviews are positive, include them in the kit.

    • 7

Compile a complete list of all the credits in the film. Include this at the end of the packet.

    • 8

Place all of the above mentioned materials into the 9" x 12" folder.
