How to Make a Press Kit for Record Companies

If you are trying to get your name recognized by a record label, start by organizing a press kit. The kit should provide information about your music and promote your band as a good investment. Record companies will want to see your music as marketable and potentially successful before signing you on. Display the best possible image of your band in the press kit, as it acts as your representative. You can also send your press kit to journalists and disc jockeys to get your band's name known.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on a visual theme that incorporates your band's logo. Carrying out the theme on all the components of the press kit (for example: on borders and on the music sample sleeve) displays a professional appearance and ensures that all the band's artistic aspects are unified.

    • 2

Write a press release, telling the record company why your band is getting the message out now--perhaps your tour is beginning, or your new album just came out. Do not, however, ask the record company for its support in your endeavor. The company's decision will be made based on your music, and you must appear as an appealing prospect without sounding desperate.

    • 3

Compile a list of all the albums you have recorded for a discography, including release dates and a short blurb about each. Or, if your current album is your first, include this fact in the album's blurb. Express this information on a letter-sized sheet of paper that bears your chosen visual theme and your band's logo.

    • 4

Write a short biography of all the band members. Each account should be concise, bearing individuals' accomplishments and a few words about their musical history. Include color head shots of all the band members with the individuals' biographies, as well as a color photo of all the band members together.

    • 5

Include your latest album in a sleeve that matches the rest of the press kit.

    • 6

Include contact details for your band's manager so that the record company may contact you. A good way to accomplish this is by including his business card on one of the inner pockets of the press kit's folder.

    • 7

Place all of the press kit's pieces into a folder. If you do not yet have folders with your band's logo, a creative way of making personalized folders is by folding up an old concert poster into the correct size. Using one of your own posters also ensures that your band's press kit will immediately stand out in comparison to others.

    • 8

Call the record company if, after two weeks have passed, you have heard nothing back. Make sure the company has received your press kit, but keep the call brief.
