1990s Teen Girl Bands

A series of teenage girl bands formed and quickly gained popularity in the 1990s. At the time, teenagers were interested in a wide variety of music; the variety of the music that these bands played reflected this. During the 1990s, the popularity of teen girl bands grew through tours, radio appearances, television specials and cassette and CD sales.
  1. The Spice Girls

    • Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Melanie Chisholm formed the Spice Girls formed in 1994. Their first single, "Wannabe," debuted in 1996, after which the British group began to gain worldwide recognition. Their first album, "Spice," sold 23 million copies. Over the course of the group's musical career, they produced four albums and 12 singles. They sold over 80 million records worldwide, making them the most successful female group in music history. Although the Spice Girls parted ways in 1998, the entire group participated in a reunion tour in 2007 and 2008. They have also released a greatest-hits album.

    Destiny's Child

    • Destiny's Child formed in Houston, Texas in 1990, when member Beyonce Knowles was just nine years old. They didn't secure a major-label contract until 1997, when Columbia Records signed the group. They immediately became a smash success, producing multiple number one hits amidst the constant drama that led to numerous personnel changes over the band's lifetime. Destiny's Child's initial, self-titled release went platinum; they continued to be a dominant force in both the pop and R&B charts into the early 2000s.

    All Saints

    • Melanie Blatt and Shaznay Lewis joined forces in London in 1993, when they began writing and recording the music which would eventually become the basis of All Saints. All Saints, though easily compared to (and sometimes mistaken for) the Spice Girls, were known for their focus on the music itself. All Saints first became popular in Europe; they eventually went global, producing two platinum albums, five number one hits and nine top-10 singles in the 1990s.
