How to Make Your Own Music Video Program

In the 1980s, MTV started airing a new form of video broadcasts---music videos. Making these videos usually required a large budget to finance writers, sets, equipment and production personnel. Music videos were produced for well known musical artists like the Rolling Stones, Billy Joel and Billy Idol. Today, making a music video has gotten much easier thanks to advances in digital video technology. It's now easy and affordable to make and distribute your own music video.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain the audio portion. Get a digital format of the song you want to make a music video of, and download it to your computer. Download from a CD by putting the CD into the CD drive. Click "Import songs" on the pop-up menu. Free audio software programs such as audacity can also do this.

    • 2

Storyboard your video. Create a story board with the lyrics of the song on one side and the specific video shots on the other side. This can be done on paper or with software. One software program that does this is Adobe Story.

Plan the production. Have talent sign release forms that legally give you permission to shoot and distribute images of them in a video. Obtain shooting permits from the local municipal offices where you will be shooting. Practice with talent, and have a pre-production meeting to go over details with everyone involved in your video.

Prepare for the shoot. Charge all batteries, test all equipment and cables, have enough video storage such as extra tapes or capture cards for your camcorder and get plenty of rest the night before. If using a crew, distribute a crew sheet with their names and responsibilities. Include the time they need to arrive on location.

    • 5

Shoot the music video. Bring your camcorder and equipment to the location of your video shoot. Play the song on an amplified portable MP3 speaker, and have your talent "mouth" the lyrics for synchronicity. Shoot plenty of takes. Shoot the scenes you have previously written on your storyboard.

Edit the video. Import the song on your computer into the video-editing software. Capture the video footage you shot, and import it into your computer using the video-editing software. Log the different shots you have, and use them in the appropriate places along the song's timeline in the editing software. Render the completed version, and save it.

Distribute it. Distribute your music video through content sharing web sites such as YouTube and vimeo. If the content is appropriate, distribute it through your local access cable television station, and distribute it to people via email and web hyperlinks.
