1970s Children's TV Shows

By the 1970s, the average American household had at least one television. Subscriptions to cable television, which had existed since the 1950s, tripled between 1970 and 1979, leading to a boom in the variety of shows produced specifically for children.
  1. Educational

    • Educational programs for children in preschool and elementary school became popular in this decade, with some lasting well into the 1980s and beyond. These included shows such as Romper Room, Sesame Street, The Electric Company and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

    Cartoons

    • Well-liked animated programs included Scooby-Doo, Josie & the Pussycats, Fat Albert & the Cosby Kids, The Pink Panther, Superfriends and Schoolhouse Rock. Winnie the Pooh was a favorite amongst the preschool crowd.

    Non-Animated

    • Older children were entertained by Shazam, Land of the Lost and the Mickey Mouse Club. The younger set enjoyed shows like Captain Kangaroo and The Bugaloos.
