Both Tivo and cable DVR systems digitally record television programs for pausing live TV, rewinding or viewing at a later time. Tivo offers your choice of a 45-hour or 180-hour recording time, but recording capacities for cable and satellite versions vary by provider. Tivo also streams many multimedia services including instant movies and televisions shows, as well as customized radio stations and Internet applications.
Cable DVR equipment is typically provided to customers free of charge with programming service. A DVR service fee of less than $10 is usually billed to the customer each month until DVR service is discontinued. Similarly, in December 2010 Tivo was offering a package in which the Tivo equipment is free with a two year agreement of $19.99 per month, though other packages are available.
Tivo is compatible with limited satellite programming providers. However, all cable and digital antenna viewers can use Tivo's services. Alternatively, cable and satellite DVRs are only compatible with the programming company that provides them. Upon discontinuation of service, users must return the equipment, or else face charges for the DVR equipment. Tivo users, on the other hand, own their equipment outright or upon completion of their two year contracts and owe nothing upon discontinuation of service.
