Nashville Public TV Stations

Nashville is known for a lot more than just country and western music or the Grand Ole Opry. A burgeoning arts and entertainment scene awaits residents of central Tennessee. The arts and entertainment are often featured on the Public Broadcasting Service, a television network which was an alternative to the "Big Three," NBC, ABC and CBS, back as far as the late 1960s. Other public television stations are found under the Nashville Education Community and Arts Television Network umbrella of education, community and arts, while another channel centers around Nashville government.
  1. WNPT-TV

    • Billed as "Nashville Public Television," this PBS affiliate (wnpt.org) combines the regular lineup with programs geared around Nashville. A day's schedule might feature past performances from notable country music stars. The next day may bring a history of Nashville and its status in the 1950s. A flagship program is "Tennessee Crossroads," which travels all over the state to show off Tennessee and what it has to offer residents and visitors. WNPT is located on channel 8 on area TVs and cable systems. There is a separate digital channel, 8.2, with a different program schedule.

    Music City Arts 9

    • One of three channels to fall under the Nashville Education Community and Arts Television Network (www.necat.tv), Music City Arts spotlights the best of Nashville in music, arts, film and dance. Programs such as Music City Circus!, Music City Roots and Best of the Nashville Film Festival are built around Nashville's arts scene. It is found on Comcast channel 9 and programs 24 hours a day.

    IQTV 10

    • The second of the three NECAT channels, this channel bills itself as Nashville's Education Channel. Programs that are "good for the brain," as the station's slogan suggests, are geared toward documentaries, lectures and educational shows. Found on Comcast 10, programs for IQTV are produced by Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Tennessee Nature Conservancy.

    ANTV 19

    • Comcast Channel 19 is home to the third NECAT channel, which is meant for any resident of Davidson County who has a suggestion or idea for a TV program. Shows on Access Nashville are user-produced and revolve around topics such as law, health and music. The channel invites would-be producers to apply and produce their own programs.

    Metro3

    • Comcast Channel 3 is home to the Nashville and Davidson County government channel, which includes anything having to do with government meetings and conferences. A sample program day might include a meeting of the budget and finance committee, followed by a meeting of the traffic and parking commission. The channel broadcasts these meetings as they take place, inviting a chance for residents who cannot attend to sit in the comfort of their homes and watch.

    The Tennessee Channel

    • On each Tennessee PBS station's digital feed (WNPT), The Tennessee Channel offers four-hour program blocks Saturdays from 5-9 p.m. Central time and Sundays from 1-5 p.m. Programs on The Tennessee Channel are ones previously featured on one PBS station in the state but not available to the other five. A program produced by the Memphis PBS affiliate may be aired, for example, or one produced by Knoxville.
