Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber serve as the hosts of "VeggieTales." Bob plays the role of the grounded, straight-man host and storyteller while Larry is the singing and dancing humorous sidekick. Laura Carrot, sometimes accompanied by her brother Lenny Carrot, acts as a role model for younger viewers. The brave young Lenny is the best friend of Junior Asparagus, the spunky cap-wearing hero of many "VeggieTales" stories.
The red-haired rhubarb Petunia came to prominence in 2005 as Larry the Cucumber's potential love interest. The neurotic English-accented Archibald Asparagus fills "VeggieTales"' requisite "nerdy" role while the zucchini Mr. Nezzer and the gourd Mr. Lunt are the closest thing the show has to villains. They aren't truly evil, but just make some bad choices here and there. The possibly senile and definitely southern Pa Grape plays a wide variety of roles in numerous tales.
The supporting characters include the French Peas, who always travel as group; the helpful computer Qwerty; and Scooter, the Scottish carrot who works as chief engineer aboard the U.S.S. Applepie and police officer in the veggie town of Bubmlyburg. As "VeggieTales" promotes the importance of family, Junior Asparagus' mom and dad appear regularly. Madame Blueberry has appeared in various episodes, teaching children lessons about materialism and being happy with what they have.
Some members of the ancillary cast of "Veggie Tales" are inspired by literary characters. Goliath is a huge and misunderstood pickle. Frankencelery turns out to be an actor from Toledo who helps Junior Asparagus overcome his fears. Larry the Cucumber sometimes takes on a superhero alter ego known as Larry-Boy, a crime fighter who wears dual plungers on his head. The lying alien Fib appeared in only one episode, while Larry's great Aunt Ruth is mentioned often in songs and jokes. As of 2011, Aunt Ruth had never actually appeared on the show.
