How to Apologize to the News

News bureaus rely for their information on a network of sources and contacts, including government watchdog agencies, business analysts and representatives of public services such as police, fire and education. If you are a source for a journalist, and you have provided misleading information or engaged in some other kind of conduct for which you need to apologize, your best approach is to offer a detailed account of the situation, take responsibility, recognize your role and ask for forgiveness.

Instructions

    • 1

Provide a detailed account of the situation, explaining who was involved and what kind of story was being reported. State why and how you came to be a source, noting the basis of your claims to credibility (such as expertise or insider information). If you provided misleading information, say this plainly and why you did so. Correct the facts.

    • 2

Take responsibility, recognizing your role in the situation. Acknowledge the hurt caused by your actions. State specifically whether you have damaged the reputations of journalists, members of the community or colleagues. Use language to describe your wrongdoing such as "foolish," "reckless," "selfish" and "cowardly."

    • 3

State your regret. Promise you will not repeat the offense and that you will work to repair the damage. Ask for forgiveness from the news organization, your employers and anyone else harmed by your actions.
