Where to Obtain Grants for Black Female Screenwriters

There are many resources and opportunities for African-American women screenwriters who are attempting to further their knowledge, finance their endeavors or sell their screenplays. It is advisable that a writer not simply narrow her search to resources available for African-American women. There are resources available for women and African-Americans separately, and also for people who are simply screenwriters. It is also advisable to check with each individual state and look for opportunities available through the states' arts councils.
  1. Opportunities Within Individual States

    • An example of a specific state resource is the New York State Arts Council, which provides funding for a variety of individual creative endeavors. Most states have an arts council that will provide an application for a request for funding for an individual screenwriter.

    Resources for Women

    • The organization Women Make Movies offers a concise list of funding opportunities for women working in the field of film, including writers. The organization also offers a service providing a tax-exempt status for artists so that they may qualify for further funding.

    Resources for African-Americans

    • There are a number of resources for African-American artists. Some of these resources, such as The National Black Writers Foundation, offer grants and fellowships to authors of all types of writing. Other organizations such as the Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center offer links to available fellowships and grant opportunities.
