How to Obtain Grants for Book Writers

For writers, sometimes the hardest part of actually writing is finding the time to write. Most writers work full-time and have families to take care of; they write part-time, or whenever they have a few moments. Instructions

    • 1

Search for a list of companies and organizations that offer grants. Look in reputable sources such as writing newsletters you are familiar with or on a grant-giving government website as listed in Resources.

    • 2

Read the requirements of each organization carefully since each one has specific rules for the use of their money and who can apply for it. Find a group or organization that best fits the book project you want to work on. Keep in mind that some grants offer money while others offer publication of your book or residencies.

    • 3

Download, print and fill out the application. Read the entire application over before writing anything on it. Think about your answers. Make sure you are clear in your objective. Keep in mind that any project unclear to you as the writer will certainly be unclear for the organization offering the grant.

    • 4

Craft and edit a writing sample, or the complete project as requested by the application. Give the organization exactly what they want. Read through your work several times to make sure you are giving them your best work. Additionally, ask a friend or editor for help to get another viewpoint.

    • 5

Follow each request on the application exactly. Remember that some places are extremely particular, and if you put your name in the wrong place that will automatically disqualify you in spite of your writing ability or how superb your project may seem.

    • 6

Write a grant proposal. Make sure to answer all the questions they ask of you in this proposal. Work on this diligently for several days, weeks or even months to ensure you have included everything and fine tuned your writing.

    • 7

Read everything one more time to make sure you have included all the specific parts of the proposal. Make sure you have signed all the necessary paperwork and that you send it before any requested due dates.
