Grants for Women Artists & Playwrights

There are many organizations that offer grants to female artists and playwrights, allowing recipients the financial support to create and focus on their art. Grants vary in dollar amount from a few hundred to tens of thousands of dollars. Understandably, competition for these grants can be stiff, so it's best to come to the table prepared with all the materials and information each organization requires of its applicants.
  1. The Facts

    • Grants are awarded by private or nonprofit institutions, such as colleges, universities and civic organizations, to financially assist qualified applicants. Different foundations give out different types of grants. In the case of women artists and playwrights, associations devoted to the visual, literary and performing arts award grants to those candidates who fit the ideals of the organization and show the most potential.

    Function

    • The goal of a grant is to provide financial support to grantees. When it comes to the arts, many promising individuals do not have the time and fiscal freedom they need to create their work. This can be due to a variety of circumstances, such as a low-paying day job, family obligations, or the costs of materials and education. When one is awarded a grant, in whatever dollar amount, it ensures at least a small semblance of financial stability and artistic freedom.

    Types

    • The types of grants available differ from organization to organization. The great majority of grants are awarded without stipulation as to how the money should be spent, so long as it is in service to the artist. Some institutions, however, may request the money go toward certain necessities, such as training, supplies, or research work.

There are also foundations that offer grants to women who are members of a minority population. Women of color, lesbians and women on a limited income may qualify for special types of grants.

    Considerations

    • Applying for a grant is sometimes a long and labor-intensive process. Applicants must be aware of the requirements, fine print and deadlines for each grant, allowing enough time to gather all of the necessary paperwork. When applying, artists and playwrights will need to demonstrate talent in their chosen field and show a solid dedication to their craft.

After an initial grant application is received, a panel of professionals reviews it in depth. Since each grant likely receives hundreds or thousands of applicants, this procedure can take a significant amount of time. However, during the application process, most organizations will clearly state the notification date for announcing the award recipient.

    Benefits

    • Winning a grant might mean financial salvation to a struggling artist or writer. Many recipients are able to work and concentrate on their craft without wondering how they will pay the rent.

A grant can also function as a career-booster. Many world-renowned organizations, such as the National Endowment for the Arts and The Fund for Women Artists, have helped launch the careers of numerous successful female artists and playwrights. At the very least, receiving a grant looks impressive on a resume.
