Grants are awarded by private or nonprofit institutions, such as colleges, universities and civic organizations, to financially assist qualified applicants. Different foundations give out different types of grants. In the case of women artists and playwrights, associations devoted to the visual, literary and performing arts award grants to those candidates who fit the ideals of the organization and show the most potential.

When applying, artists and playwrights will need to demonstrate talent in their chosen field and show a solid dedication to their craft.
After an initial grant application is received, a panel of professionals reviews it in depth. Since each grant likely receives hundreds or thousands of applicants, this procedure can take a significant amount of time. However, during the application process, most organizations will clearly state the notification date for announcing the award recipient.
Winning a grant might mean financial salvation to a struggling artist or writer. Many recipients are able to work and concentrate on their craft without wondering how they will pay the rent.
A grant can also function as a career-booster. Many world-renowned organizations, such as the National Endowment for the Arts and The Fund for Women Artists, have helped launch the careers of numerous successful female artists and playwrights. At the very least, receiving a grant looks impressive on a resume.
