How to Become a Comedic Actress

Comedic actresses exist all over the world, but the places with larger availabilities of work are Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. Unlike dramatic actors, comedy actors can be fairly unknown and still get a big chance to perform onstage in front of an audience at live, low-budget improv shows. Although it is possible for any woman to become a comedic actress, those with a particular flair for writing or stand-up comedy are especially valuable in the comedic world because they can also write for comedy shows or tour as a comedian.

      Get a headshot taken by a reputable headshot photographer that you trust. Although most actors select two diverse photos to illustrate her range. A comedic actress, however, can experiment with two different commercial or comedic headshots to suit her different comedy auditions.

      Type up a resume composed of your acting experience in film, TV or theater, even if it is non-comedic (sometimes called legit) work. Try to list your comedy experience first. Follow this information with any special skills you may have as well as your school information. Staple your resume to the back of your headshot.

      Call comedy clubs and ask for open mic night schedules. Many comedy clubs will allow the general public to try a short set of stand-up on certain nights. Practice your comedy show. Keep submitting flyers to other comedy clubs or bars in case they are looking for comedians. Having stand-up experience is a great way to break into a sitcoms, where many comedians switch from straight stand-up comedy to regular acting roles.

      Travel to Los Angeles before pilot season to audition for the new sitcom pilots being pitched to networks. Many comedic actresses get their big break after funny work in a sitcom pilot. If you're lucky, your pilot will be picked up, and you may then become an overnight star. However, many TV sitcom pilots do not make it past pilot season and are scrapped.

      Keep your comedy chops strong by joining an improv troupe. Improv troupes perform shows that are made up entirely on the spot. Most comedy troupes have a weekly performance schedule. Performing in a comedy troupe is the best way to get seen while you are not performing at any other venue. If you are planning to audition for Saturday Night Live or another comedy sketch show, it is imperative that you join an improv troupe and take improv classes.
