Instructions

    • 1

Take a snapshot of your child. Traditional head shots can be done for children, but they are not necessary, according to Marla Dell and countless other talent agents. The photographs should be close-up to half-body shots that capture who your child is and how she will appear when he walks in the casting room door. Because of the simplicity of digital photography, you can even take new photos for particular parts. Once your child has established acting credits, you should have headshots taken.

    • 2

Enroll your child in acting lessons. Acting coaches geared to adults sometimes see children as well. You can find acting classes in any major city in the country. If enrolling your child in classes is not practical, get a book on acting to help your child start exploring the craft.

    • 3

Obtain "Cool Characters for Kids: 71 One-Minute Monologues" by Janet B. Milstein (see Resources). Read it to your child. Help her develop a monologue for auditions with agents, managers and casting directors.

    • 4

Contact local theaters and ask about opportunities. Productions often need child actors, and not as many children are interested in theater as in television and film.

    • 5

Register your child with local extra work agencies. She will gain experience and get an idea of the professionalism required on the set. It's sort of like boot camp for working on set, since the conditions will be much more challenging than for a lead actor. Due to child labor laws, she won't have to stay on the set for extra work as long as her adult peers.

    • 6

Submit the snapshot of your child to agencies. Again, they are not expecting a long resume from a child. If she has experience, describe it in the cover letter.
