You don't have to be a professional writer to be able to write a comedic parody. Knowing how to properly write a comedic parody will allow you to create projects that have the potential to appeal to a large audience of individuals. Comedic parodies are some of the most successful forms of content on the Internet and appear in various forms. Comedic parodies often appear as books, films, and songs and have become a widely accepted artistic medium. You can write a comedy parody by understanding the dynamics that make up each specific aspect of the project.

Instructions

  1. Music-Based Comedic Parodies

    • 1

Study successful music-based parodies. For example, if you will be writing a comedic parody of a popular song, listen to various "Weird Al" Yankovic's songs. Observe aspects of the song such as lyrics, musical arrangement, and voice inflection. Take notes on any aspects that stand out in your mind.

    • 2

Create a memorable name for your comedic parody. Comedic parodies will typically draw humor from the original name of the specific song. For example, a parody of the popular Nirvana song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" could be "Smells Like Pumpkin Pie." Record possible titles for your project into your notes.

    • 3

Become familiar with the proper songwriting format. Almost all successful songs including parodies are written to adhere to the basic songwriting format. The song will be setup as follows, "Intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, fade chorus." Gain a firm understanding of each aspect of this format. Understanding songwriting format will allow you to create a song that adheres to the common conventions of music and is easy on the ear. Also possessing knowledge of the songwriting format will allow you to catch yourself if you begin to stray from it during the process of writing the parody's lyrics. Record any notes into the notepad.

    • 4

Obtain a copy of the song's original lyrics. Read through the lyrics until you have a firm understanding of the song's meaning. Record anything that stands out in your mind while reading.

    • 5

Write your comedic parody's lyrics. Refer to your notes while writing. Write lyrics that draw attention to the aspects of the song that stood out in your mind or things about the original artist that others may find funny. Once you have completed the first draft of your lyrics seek advice from others who are familiar with the original song. Record their observations into your notes then revise the lyrics accordingly.

    Story-Based Comedic Parodies

    • 6

Become familiar with the original piece of work of which you will be creating a comedic parody. Study the work while recording notes. This will help you gain a complete understanding of the plot.

    • 7

Determine which communications medium you will be presenting your comedy parody on and study successful parodies that have appeared within that medium. For example, if you will be writing a comedic parody of a popular movie, it would benefit you to watch various film parodies. Take notes on what you observe.

    • 8

Study the proper writing format for the communications medium in which your comedic parody will appear. For example, if you are creating a parody of a film, learn as much as possible about the proper screenwriting format. You can gain a better understanding of form by reading the screenplay of the original film you will be parodying or reading the original manuscript of a book. Films and books often follow what is known as the "Three Act Structure." Understanding this structure will allow you to understand the general area where plot points and other important aspects of a story should take place. Many screenplays as well as information on the "Three Act Structure" can be found online. Take notes.

    • 10

Satirize key aspects of the story. For example, in the popular science fiction film "Star Wars" a large alien creature was named "Jabba the Hutt." This character was satirized in the 1987 film "Space Balls." The creators of the film named the character "Pizza the Hutt."

Write dialog that draws attention to the aspects of the story that stood out in your mind or create situations that draw out specific flaws in characters.
