Draw out a diagram of a backdrop stand you wish to create. Take into account that the stand should be six-feet long by six-feet high to thoroughly cover up background objects when the camera is in close up.
Purchase PVC pipe material to construct your stand. Remember to buy pipe, PVC elbows, T-connectors, caps, couplings and cross connectors as needed. Assemble the stand before moving on. PVC is much less expensive than aluminum or other metals and easier to manage than wood.
Select a rayon or polyester fabric drape to use as the back drop itself. Rayon and polyester are lightweight, inexpensive, reflect light well and simple to paint if painting is needed. Measure and cut the fabric to connect to all sides of the stand and cover the entire empty area between the stand poles. Punch holes every six inches along the entire perimeter and connect the drape to the stand with wire straps. Pull the fabric tight so there are no wrinkles or give when in standing position.
