Transferring Home Movies From Camcorder to DVD

Home video camcorders have come a long way since their inception in 1982 with heightened video and audio quality, along with many digital editing features and other niceties. However, the challenge of finding ways to play back home movies remains. Thankfully, since the dawn of the DVD age, the ability to transfer home movies to video disc has provided an easier way to play back the movies without the need for the camcorder. If you have one movie, or a full library of them, transferring them to DVD not only provides viewing convenience, but it archives your movies for posterity.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the RCA video or HDMI cable to your camcorder output jack. Plug the other end of the cable into the input jack on your DVD recorder.

    • 2

Open the disc tray on your DVD recorder. Insert a blank DVD-R or DVD-RW, label side up, and close the disc tray.

    • 3

Turn on the camcorder. Cue the movie to the point where you wish to begin recording and pause the playback.

    • 4

Press "Record" on your DVD recorder and immediately un-pause the playback on your camcorder. Monitor the playback, and press "Stop" on the DVD recorder when you reach the desired stopping point in the home movie.

    • 5

Follow your DVD recorder's specific operating instructions for finalizing the DVD-R or DVD-RW recording. This makes the disc viewable in all DVD players, not just your DVD recorder.

    • 6

Disconnect the cable from the DVD recorder and camcorder. Eject the DVD-R or DVD-RW and write the title of the home movie on the label of the disc with permanent marker, if so desired. Avoid using label makers as they can unbalance the disc and render it unplayable in some DVD players.

    • 7

Turn off the camcorder and DVD recorder when done.
