How to Store My DVD to My Hard Drive

The arrival of DVDs made VHS tapes obsolete. Compared to VHS tapes, DVDs presented an easier way to store and care for movies. Digital copies allow you to store and play your movies on your hard drive. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 states that it is illegal to copy commercial DVDs, but some movie studios, such as Warner Brothers, allow for digital copies to be stored on a hard drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the DVD into your computer. Your DVD must be "digital copy" compatible, meaning the movie studio allows you to legally make a digital copy of your movie.

    • 2

Play your DVD. For PC users, select "My computer," then double-click "DVD_Special_Features.exe." For Mac users, launch iTunes and select "Devices." Then select "Digital copy disc."

    • 3

Enter your 12-digit authorization code found in your DVD digital copy insert. This code is used to register the digital copyright, preventing any further copies from being made.

    • 4

Follow the online instructions to make your digital copy.
