The Terminator explains to John Connor: "My CPU is a neuronet processor, a learning computer. The more contact I have with humans, the more I learn." The Terminator is a cybernetic organism whose neuronet processor adapts human characteristics in order to better protect John from the T-1000 model.
Because of his neuronet processor, the Terminator displays signs of becoming more and more human as he interacts with John. Early in the film, John attempts to persuade the Terminator to stop killing innocent people. The Terminator does not understand at first, but as the film progresses he learns to avoid human casualties. John teaches the Terminator how to give a high five, swear and say phrases such as "Chill out," "No problemo" and the famous "Hasta la vista, baby."
While a learning computer like that displayed in Terminator 2 is still only the subject of fantasy, robots being developed at the University of Southern California in the Computational Learning and Motor Control Lab are able to learn primitive movements from humans. Using a robotic framework that encodes the movement into the robots' locomotion systems, one such robot was taught how to perform a tennis backhand.
