Types of Lightsabers

Lightsabers, the iconic Jedi weapons from the "Star Wars" franchise, have a wealth of mythology built up around them and their use. Similar in style to the Japanese katana, the lightsaber consists of a two-handed hilt, and a colored plasma blade around 3 feet in length. The color of the blade varies from Jedi to Jedi, though the evil Sith have always been represented by a red lightsaber blade.
  1. Single Bladed

    • The two-handed, single bladed model is the most common type of lightsaber. It was first seen in Obi Wan's hut on Tatooine when the old Jedi gave Luke his father's weapon. The single bladed lightsaber has a plasma blade around 3 feet in length that can be any color. Jedi are expected to construct their own handle, making the style of the hilt unique for each lightsaber.

    Saberstaff

    • First seen being used by Darth Maul in "The Phantom Menace," the saberstaff has a long handle that emits a full length lightsaber blade from each end. The wielder holds the saberstaff in the middle, making it considerably longer than the standard lightsaber. Each blade can be projected independently so it can still be used as a standard, single bladed weapon.

    Curved-Hilt

    • Wielded by Count Dooku in "Attack of the Clones," the curved-hilt lightsaber is very similar to the single bladed version, except the hilt is angled to curve around the user's grip. This makes it more accurate, but requires a greater skill in its construction as the internal crystals must be aligned to work around the angles in the hilt.

    Force FX

    • Lightsaber prop replicas were originally designed and sold by Master Replicas. They featured machined models of the "Star Wars" sword handles and a polycarbonate plastic blade with a luminescent material that reproduced the lightsaber's glow effect. Electronics installed in the hilt made appropriate sounds when the lightsaber moved or clashed with an object.
