Harkins Movie Theatres in Arizona

Harkins Theatres is a family owned and operated movie theater chain that started in 1933. As of 2011, Harkins is the sixth largest chain in the United States. With It's exclusive in-lobby Playcenters, the only IMAX in Arizona playing current blockbuster movies, award-winning popcorn and loyalty programs, it's easy to see why "Ultimate Moviegoing" is Harkins Theatre's slogan.
  1. History

    • Harkins Theatres started with a single venue in Tempe, AZ purchased in the middle of the Great Depression by 18-year old Dwight "Red" Harkins. Through the years, Harkins innovations aided in the movie-going experience from carpet that glowed in the dark to headphones to help the hearing impaired enjoy the movies. Harkins passed away in 1974, but the business was taken over by his eldest son Dan Harkins. Not unlike his innovative father, Dan Harkins continued to expand the family business; with attention to the latest technology, Harkins Theatres has grown to 30 locations as of the start of 2011.

    Locations

    • The original Harkins Theatre (College Theatre) still stands, completely renovated, in heart of downtown Tempe, Arizona, now known as Valley Art. You can view foreign or independent film in this historic location. Cine Capri, another classic Harkins theater built in 1966, was known for its extravagant decor. It was not able to be saved from demolition but has been rebuilt in Scottsdale, Arizona along with a museum dedicated to the original Cine Capri. Harkins has 17 additional locations in the Phoenix metro area including its IMAX, three in Northern Arizona and three more in Southern Arizona.

    Harkins Services

    • Harkins has a Playcenter in the lobby of some locations; these Playcenters allow parents to drop off their 3 to 8 year old children to be watched by trained employees while they enjoy a movie. It costs $6 per child and includes popcorn; children can read books, watch movies and do crafts. Harkins also offers loyalty programs good for discounted drinks and popcorn. Once you purchase your loyalty cup at full retail price, the rest of the year you can return it for a refill for only one dollar. For $25, you can purchase a loyalty t-shirt and receive free popcorn every time you wear it to the movie theater.
