How to Rate Movies for Children

Certain movie content is not appropriate for young children, and many parents intend to shield their kids from mature material. The Motion Picture Association of America is responsible for developing and maintaining the movie rating system. For every movie that is produced in the United States, the MPAA assigns it a rating based on language and content. If you wish to rate movies for your children, use the MPAA rating assignments as a guide so that you understand what to look for in a film.

Instructions

    • 1

Study the MPAA rating system. Learn about what differentiates the G-rated films from the PG-rated films. Note that films with a PG-13 rating are advised for children at least 13 years old, and may not be appropriate for kids who are younger. This determination is up to you as the parent.

    • 2

Watch a G-rated movie and pay attention to the language and material. According to the MPAA, a G-rating suggests that the film contains no material that would be offensive to children.

    • 3

Count how many times a vulgar word is used in the film. You and the MPAA may have different opinions about what constitutes a curse word. Additionally, count how many times you see any content that seems inappropriate for children, such as romantic interactions. Determine whether you agree with the rating given by the MPAA when the movie is finished.

    • 4

Watch a PG-rated movie. Compare its language and content against the G-rated movie. See if you notice a difference. Decide if anything in the PG movie offended you or is too mature for your child. If not, then it is probably safe to say that PG movies are an appropriate movie rating for your kid. If the PG movie seems too mature, rule out this movie category from your child's viewing options.

Screen movies before your kids watch them. Research the movie that your child wants to watch, and find out what other parents are saying about it, whether critics recommend it for children and what type of content can be expected in the film. Watch the trailer from the movie's website and review the rating given by the MPAA.
