Set up the location where you plan to stand or sit while recording yourself to video. If you will be sitting, set up the chair at least 6 feet from the wall or scene that will be behind you. If standing, simply mark the location on the ground with a piece of paper, making it 6 feet from the wall or scene behind you.
Set up a sturdy video camera tripod 6 feet from the location where you will be standing or sitting. If you will be using the camera's built-in microphone, don't exceed 6 feet or the audio level of your voice recording will become weak.
Set up two 500-watt halogen shop lights so each is 6 to 8 feet to the left and right of the camera tripod. Aim the lights inward so they shine directly onto the area where you will be sitting or standing, then aim each of the lights outward slightly so enough of the light also shines on the wall or scene behind your standing or sitting location. This will illuminate you fully while also preventing your shadow from appearing on the wall or scene behind you.
Rehearse your speech report as many times as possible so that you will be comfortable while making your report presentation. Try to memorize your speech rather than reading it during the recording, since it can be noticeable to some viewers if you are reading from a script. If you can deliver your report from memory, your instructor or audience may give you higher marks when grading or judging your presentation.
Set up your video camera on the tripod. Raise or lower the tripod as necessary until the camera will be able to record you fully from the waist up. When making the height adjustment, adjust so that the camera is looking upward toward you slightly. A 10-degree angle is sufficient. The only purpose of this slight angle is so that your eyes appear to look relaxed rather than staring straight into the camera, which can appear harsh.
Start the video camera and then sit, or stand, in your designated location in front of the camera. Present your speech report as you had rehearsed it.
Connect your video camera to a VCR or a DVD recorder. Whichever you use depends on what your instructor or audience will be viewing your report on (VCR or DVD player). Rewind your video on the video camera if it is one that uses an internal tape. Press the "Record" button on the VCR or DVD recorder, then press the "Play" button on the video camera. Allow the video to be transferred and recorded by your recording device. If you desire to cut out the portions in which you are moving to the camera to turn it on and off, leave those portions out of the recorded video.
Submit your report for viewing and grading.
