What is a mock epic?

A mock epic is a literary work that parodies the style and form of an epic poem, but treats a trivial or humorous subject matter. Mock epics often use inflated language, exaggerated characters, and improbable plotlines to create a sense of irony or satire. Some examples of mock epics include Alexander Pope's "The Rape of the Lock," John Dryden's "Mac Flecknoe," and Samuel Butler's "Hudibras."
