Prepare to swing with your neighbor. The swing step begins by taking ballroom position. Ballroom position involves both dancers facing each other with their shoulders parallel and their bodies offset by half a body's length. The man places his right hand underneath the woman's shoulder blade. The woman places her left hand on the man's upper arm, with her fingers draping over his shoulder, and her right hand rests in between the thumb and forefinger of the man's left hand. Both dancers should raise their elbows slightly and maintain good posture.
Swing with your neighbor. This involves both neighbors facing each other's right shoulders while remaining parallel and walking around each other clockwise.
Women perform a chain. This involves two women taking right hands in the form of a handshake as they pass across the set. The man now across from each woman takes the woman's left hand, while reaching his right hand around her back to hold her right hand, that should now be on her hip.
Dancers turn in to face each other.
Women perform a start 1/2 hey. This involves the women passing each other along the set by their right shoulders until they are across from their partner for the first time.
