How to Learn to Swing Dance Online

Swing dance is a broad category that includes a variety of dances from the Lindy to the West Coast Swing to country swing. If you have ever watched a couple expertly dancing a swing-style dance together, you might be surprised to know you can learn some of those steps on the Internet. There are plenty of instructional videos online that will help you learn to swing dance in the privacy of your home.

      Visit the DanceTV website and click the “Swing” link on the left sidebar. Click the links to browse through the 13 lessons. Each one has an introduction and a concluding presentation to help you make up your own swing dance routine. Click on “Video & CD” on the left sidebar to order a CD and a video that complement the online lessons.

      Go to the Learn to Dance website and click either the “Free Online Video Lessons” link or the “Lessons in Text Form” link on the right side of the page. Select “Swing” beneath the "Text Lessons" heading to see a diagram of the steps both partners must take. Click the “Swing” link beneath the "Video Clips Basic" heading and then click the links to watch the video lessons that give a beginner an overview of the swing dance steps (one for ladies, one for men and one about timing). The site also explains the background of some swing dance steps.

      Visit the iDance website. The site sells swing lesson videos but does have free previews. Sort the videos by level by clicking the “Level” heading and start with videos under Level 1 if you are a beginner.

      Navigate to the YouTube website to view free instructional videos that can help a beginner learn the basics of swing dance patterns. There are a variety of videos, including those from "DanceCrazy," that speak directly to the beginning swing dancer. These high quality videos combine step break-downs and complete demonstrations.
