At one time it was considered to have religious connotations, but currently is just fun. Samba and other Latin dances were in introduce to the western world in the early 1930’s and both Europeans and North Americans fell in love with the fast rhythmic beat and energetic dance.Once you have been dancing and practicing the Samba a bit, there is a move that you will definitely want to integrate into your dancing and that is the Volta movements. There are many other dances that have the Volta, but the Volta in the Samba really makes you look quite the expert.

Get into the basic Samba position. Stand with your feet in line with your shoulders with your feet apart.

Do basic Samba steps, especially when the music is slow. If the music is faster then make your steps a bit quicker, but keep it basic.

    • 3

Bend and flex those knees to get that hip movement going and slightly extend your hip out to get that movement going, but keep your back and shoulders straight.

    • 4

As you come out of your basic Samba step and close your feet then take your right foot and step over to your left side and do a bounce, then do the same with your other foot.Take your left foot and step over to your right side and do a bounce. (The combination of left and right side gives you what is known as the Volta.)

    • 5

Follow through to the end. When you step back make sure your foot is positions slightly toward the outside and step on the ball of your foot, and then roll your foot toward your pinky toe. Then pull out of your knee bend and your weight should be on the foot you have just lowered, so much so that you can stand on that foot to begin your next move.
