Christian Dance Steps

Christian dance steps vary by region and religious denomination, but most are borrowed from mainstream dance styles such as ballet, modern and lyrical dance. You will also find some specialized praise dance steps mixed in. This article aims to explain the basics of Christian dance choreography, providing you with some ideas while rehearsing and performing.
  1. Learning the Basics

    • Like any style of dance, Christian dance steps are broken into different categories--floor work, turns, leaps and expressive movement. You will find advantages to each, and when all are learned properly, they make for a beautiful dance piece that is glorifying to God while also serving as a blessing to your audience.

One common step found in Christian dance is called a grapevine. To execute a grapevine, step out to the side with your right foot, cross your left foot over your right, and then step out with your right again. Next, cross the left behind the right, and then step out with the right one more time. Repeat these two sequences, and add various arm movements (slowly raising them over your head, keeping them in a high fifth position or out in a strong second position, etc.) for a beautiful yet basic praise dance step.

Another simple step is called a chase. Step forward with your right foot, and then hop up into the air so your left foot meets your right in the air. It's similar to a very graceful gallop or a small child's skipping, and can vary in height and speed depending upon the skill of the dancer.

Finally, a chaine turn is a very basic spin used often in Christian dance. Step out with your right, and then pull your left foot in close as you make a complete circle. Arms should be in first position (pretend you are hugging a beach ball)--opening when stepping out, and closing during the turn. Chaines take practice, but with a little rehearsal, you will find you can adjust the speed and quality of each individual spin.

    Leaps

    • Leaps and jumps are vital to praise dance because they help to tell stories of God lifting up an individual when she is hurting or desiring the strength to praise God more fully. Christian dance steps often involve leaps and jumps because they not only add this strong message component, but also look gorgeous in flowing pants and long skirts, providing congregants with a glorious praise show.

A simple leap often used is called a jete. Start off with a chase, and then step with your left foot. Kick your right foot into the air, and pose your legs into a split position while airborne. This takes a bit of practice, but with time you will feel as if you are soaring, even if you have to settle for a clean, low jump.

A firebird is another popular Christian dance step. Bend your knees and then leap with both feet at once--kicking your right leg straight in front of you while bending the left as if your toes will touch the back of your head. Again, this jump takes a bit of work, but you will love the beautiful addition it makes to your choreography once you master it.

    Floor Work

    • Floor work is often used in Christian dance. Different positions of praising--a kneeling prayer, an outstretched arm, a curled up, contorted body--these are all symbols of worship and reverence. The floor work you select can also help form a picture or convey a message, especially if you have a group of Christian dancers instead of just a soloist. Play around with various floor moves and encourage your teammates to help you create. Pray before each rehearsal, and you will be amazed at how the Lord leads.
