Ciara Dance Steps

Ciara is a 24-year-old hip-hop singer and dancer who had a No. 1 single "Goodies" in 2004. Since then her recording career has skyrocketed, resulting in other No. 1 releases and an album that went platinum. She has also created signature dance steps that have become popular in dance school classes, dance competitions and among the general public.
  1. "Get Up" Movements

    • To imitate Ciara's "Get Up" dance steps, move your body right, left, step back, slide and cross over with right and on the ball of the feet go in and out (as if doing the Charleston). Ciara's arms don't do anything in particular until she starts moving her feet in and out. At that point her arms circle in front of her body to the right as she has her left arm in front in a rounded position and her right arm to the side, straight with locked elbows.

    Mix of Hip-Hop Styles

    • To perform her steps from her song "1, 2 Step," make your movements in sections with counts of eight. This includes doing the robot: move, squeeze muscles and let go. You would then imitate the movements of a marionette: raising your left foot and going around in a circle while raising your hands. Ciara repeats with the right foot and moves hands to the right. She twirls her right hand in a circle while bringing her right knee around to position her body on a diagonal and doing a body roll (undulation of the torso). The movement goes in an upward motion from foot, knee, hip, chest, arms, hands. You would generally make the moves to the lyrics, "this beat is automatic, supersonic, hypnotic, funky fresh." Let your knees go in and out while your right arm shoots up right and your left arm shoots out to the side with a bent elbow across your face.

The Moonwalk in "1, 2 Step"

    • When you hear the word, "Fresh," glide your right leg around the left to turn. The right foot goes onto its toe while the left foot is flat-footed doing the moonwalk forward. Next, the left foot goes onto its toe and repeats the moonwalk to the lyrics "Work my body, so hypnotic." Repeat these movements facing the audience, with the right arm and left arm swinging to their sides. When you hear the lyrics,"this beat goes right through my chest" bend both knees, and when you hear the "boom" sound in the song, undulate your chest forward twice. Ciara follows with "crumping" (a more angry percussive jerking form of hip-hop) with her arms in a hitting motion. She then stops, pretends to grab with her right hand and brings it back in to her chest.
